Max Roach passed on today. Likely one of the best and considered by many to be one of the most influential jazz drummers ever, he was 83.

Wow. This makes me incredibly sad.
Max Roach was a monster. His work with Clifford Brown–absolutely amazing! But I have to say that my favorite Max Roach solo of all time, nay, my favorite drum solo of all time, is on J.J. Johnson’s “Blue Trombone”; it’s gotta be the most melodic drum solo I’ve ever heard.

Totally. And Mingus. Can’t forget him. I got lost on the series of YouTubes last night flipping through a ton of drum battles and performances.
